about the poem
“For Example” is the sort of poem that happens when I read too much Tomaž Šalamun and suddenly revise my understanding of what it is to write something true in a poem.

I remember writing this directly onto my laptop, which was perched on my bed as I crouched on the floor beside it like one of the monkeys before the obelisk at the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey. My girlfriend came into the room, shook her head at me, and walked away. The cat appeared and sat down on my forearm.

Later, revision was more a process of cutting away the scaffolding than adding anything, because it was impossible to get back into the headspace I was in when I first wrote it.
